To get the most out of your trip and ensure your safety, you should have a plan before you go. Fishing is a hugely enjoyable sport but do not allow one bad experience to put you off forever.
Before you pack that tackle box, tie those flies or buy that new net, you need to consider a host of issues.
Assess the location you are going to, the weather forecast beforehand, the limitations of your boat, tides and any potential hazards on your trip. Always have a contingency plan and leave details about your trip with someone on shore.
- Plan your trip in advance.
- Check the weather forecast before you go.
- Assess tides and currents before you leave.
- Seek advice from local angling sources when fishing in unfamiliar waters.
- Always bring somebody with you – never fish alone.
- Tell somebody where you are going and when you plan to return.
- Learn to swim in advance.
- Wear a personal flotation device.
- Wear the right clothing – warm waterproof clothing is essential in Irish weather.
- Watch where you are going – beware of hidden dangers such as mooring lines on quay walls falling rocks if fishing beneath cliffs.
- Keep one foot on the ground at all times when wading. Allow at least 30cm between the water’s surface and the top of your wader.
- If boating, choose the right vessel and drive at a safe speed.
